Shi Masani who was a revered Elder in our Navajo matriarchal society. She lived over 100+ years & was a respected herbalist. She was my mentor & a fierce protector of our language & culture. It is through her that the women in our family carried on our To'aheedl'iinii clan. Its meaning is 'Water that comes together."
Henry and Lena Boyd were wonderful parents. I was very lucky to have them. My father worked on the Santa Fe Railroad which took him all over the west. He was gone months at a time. He braved the outside world to provide for his family even though he spoke very little English. My mother stayed & took care of the family and livestock. She was also a gifted weaver of Navajo rugs.
The one and only picture of me as a young child. My older brother James had a camera & had me pose for him. I was around 2 years old & not happy that I had a new baby sister.
This book is dedicated to her. She encouraged me to write down my Childhood stories. Stories that she has heard since she was just a young child with rapt attention and big round brown eyes full of curiosity.
I survived the BIA Boarding School that was set up by the United States government. I was placed in a school along with most of my siblings. These schools were spread all over the country from the east coast to the west coast. Indigenous children were forcibly taken where they tried to eliminate our Native language & culture by physically punishing us if we did. They failed. We're still here.

William Whitaker was selected by Arizona Highways to present some of his paintings in the July 1975 issue. I was so proud that he picked an oil painting that I modeled for.
I'm now retired after working as an RN in the operating room for 30+ years.
My new job is being a grandmother to my grandchildren, writing children's books about my childhood experiences & weaving Navajo rugs.

There is a family story about my great-great grandmother who was kidnapped as young girl while she was out herding sheep. She was taken into Mexico and sold into slavery. She was able to escape and make her way back to our family in northern Arizona. This fascinating oral story about her bravery has always resonated with me so to give this story some merit, I took a DNA test. The results came back with some Spanish ancestry which thrilled me! This was what I needed to pursue this story & write it into a future historical novel.
